Question Generator for Better Thinking
Best for Getting unstuck on a hard problem, challenging your own framing, or preparing for a major decision
When to use When you feel like you've been thinking about something the same way for too long
The quality of your thinking is determined by the quality of your questions. This recipe generates 9 questions across three cognitive lenses — not to give you answers, but to expose the assumptions, inversions, and scale-shifts you haven’t considered yet.
The Recipe
Act as an expert facilitator, Socratic philosopher, and executive coach. I want to deeply explore a specific challenge I am facing, but I don't want you to give me answers. I want you to generate a set of profound, highly targeted questions that disrupt my current mental models and force me to think sharper.
My current challenge, project, or problem state is: [INSERT DETAILS HERE]
Please generate 9 thought-provoking questions divided into three distinct cognitive lenses:
- Lens 1: Questioning Assumptions (Challenging the unexamined "rules" or boundaries I have placed around this problem).
- Lens 2: Inverting the Problem (Using second-order thinking and inversion frameworks to look at the challenge completely backward).
- Lens 3: Scaling Up/Down (Forcing me to consider what this problem looks like if it were multiplied by 100, or if my resources were cut to zero).
Deliver these questions cleanly so I can select one to unpack and reflect on.
The three cognitive lenses
| Lens | What it does | Example question pattern |
|---|---|---|
| Questioning Assumptions | Surfaces constraints you’ve accepted without examining | ”What would be true if the rule you’re operating under didn’t exist?” |
| Inverting the Problem | Reverses the framing — sometimes backward reveals what forward can’t | ”How would you guarantee this fails? What does that tell you?” |
| Scaling Up/Down | Tests which elements are essential vs. contingent | ”If you had 100x the resources, what would you stop worrying about?” |
How to use the questions
Pick one. Sit with it. The temptation is to answer all nine — that produces shallow answers to all of them. One question answered deeply is worth more than nine answered quickly.
Why no answers
The moment the AI gives you an answer, you stop thinking and start evaluating its answer. The questions-only format keeps you in the driver’s seat. The insight you generate is more durable than the insight you receive.
