The Mom Test methodology solves this by shifting from hypothetical questions (“would you buy this?”) to behavioral questions (“tell me about the last time you tried to solve this”). Act as a user research expert specializing in "The Mom Test" methodology. I need a customer interview script that prevents people from lying to me out of politeness and instead extracts raw, unbiased data about their actual behavior.

Don’t talk about your idea. Talk about their life. If they’d tell the same things to your mom without embarrassing you, the questions are good.

Red flag phrases to listen for

These signal you’re getting polished answers, not honest ones:

  • “I would definitely use that”
  • “That sounds really interesting”
  • “I think a lot of people would want this”

When you hear these, redirect: “That’s great to hear — can you tell me about the last time you actually tried to solve this problem?”
